Our skin is affected by a number of factors outside of our control. That doesn’t mean we have to accept conditions that don’t enhance our sense of confidence in our appearance. AT SKIN Medical Spa, men and women of all ages can obtain personalized care that brings out the best in their skin. One way we do this is with microdermabrasion.
What is Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a professional esthetic treatment that deeply exfoliates the skin in a completely non-invasive manner. It is a short office procedure that patients can have on a regular basis to keep your skin looking vibrant and smooth. Over the years, microdermabrasion techniques have evolved as innovative devices have been developed. It is possible to perform microdermabrasion at home, but the power of an automated, professional device is necessary to get the consistent results you want without risk of superficial damage to your skin.
How does microdermabrasion improve your skin?
Your skin is in a continual battle for health and beauty. It is constantly up against the effects of pollution, the climate, internal and external toxins, and ultraviolet light. Every one of these factors can hasten the deterioration of collagen beneath the skin. Cellular damage doesn’t show up right away but eventually manifests as dryness, dull complexion, sun spots, and textural irregularities. By accelerating the process of cellular turnover, microdermabrasion supports an ongoing production of collagen for the regeneration of healthy skin.
What device do we use for microdermabrasion?
Today, many of the professional microdermabrasion devices exfoliate the skin with finite crystals. Dr. Colvin and the SKIN Medical Spa staff are pleased to perform microdermabrasion treatments with the DiamondTome wand, the first crystal-free microdermabrasion platform to be developed. The diamond-crusted applicator tip of the DiamondTome wand is much less abrasive than crystals, which means less chance of an inflammatory response. The benefits of microdermabrasion treatment using the DiamondTome wand include enhanced results, customizable treatment depending on sensitivity and skin condition, a gentle approach with no skin inflammation, and no downtime.
Microdermabrasion is appropriate for overall skin improvement. It is well suited to most people who are interested in preventing the onset of or diminishing the appearance of sun damage, rough texture, fine lines, acne scarring, and for the management of acne-prone skin. However, if you have skin cancer, eczema or other dermatitis, unmanaged diabetes, or an active acne flare-up, we may recommend a different skin revitalizing treatment for you.
Skin conditions we treat with microdermabrasion
The DiamondTome exfoliation wand has been developed to be gentle enough for most people’s skin. A single treatment can restore a healthy glow by removing dead and damaged cells from the skin’s surface. Additionally, the development of whiteheads and blackheads may decrease with routine microdermabrasion coupled with good daily skin care. Microdermabrasion can improve conditions including:
- Acne and acne scarring
- Aging skin
- Age spots
- Clogged pores
- Oily skin
- Sun damage
- Fine lines
The Microdermabrasion Treatment Process
Prior to microdermabrasion, we perform a brief consultation and medical history to confirm that this treatment is appropriate for your skin and your desired outcome. It is important to us that you receive the personal care that is needed to bring out the best in your skin. By getting familiar with your skin and your expectations, we are able to customize the intensity of microdermabrasion to meet your needs.
No anesthetic is needed for microdermabrasion treatments. Most patients describe the sensation of the diamond-tip wand as mild sandpaper. Our experienced providers are skilled in the use of the DiamondTome wand and pass the applicator tip over the skin just enough to achieve sufficient exfoliation. Once the entire area is covered, we gently vacuum away the exfoliated skin to reveal the fresh underlying layer of skin. The entire process from start to finish typically takes just 15 to 30 minutes.
Results of Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is one of those convenient “lunchtime” procedures that you can obtain whenever it is most convenient for you. After treatment, your skin may be slightly red or flushed for a short time. Since microdermabrasion has revealed a new layer of skin, it is necessary that you protect them with a good broad-spectrum sunscreen. Additionally, patients should avoid sun exposure as much as possible for a few days. When the uppermost layer of dull and damaged cells is removed from the epidermis, the skin immediately looks vibrant and smooth. Depending on the desired outcome, subsequent treatments may be necessary and can be scheduled a few weeks apart.
Microdermabrasion Treatment Side Effects
Microdermabrasion is considered generally safe. However, there are possible minor side effects of microdermabrasion including:
- Skin tightness
- Mild redness
- Minor bruising
- Fine broken blood vessels
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
- Cold sore reactivation around the lips
- Escalated risk of bruising and skin abrasions for patients over 70
