What is Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal uses a specific wavelength of light to target individual hair follicles. The heat from the laser damages the hair follicles and inhibits future growth. During a treatment the laser can only target actively growing hair and not “resting hair”. This is why this therapy requires multiple treatments and must be staggered weeks apart.
Common Areas treated
- Bikini area
Benefits of Laser Hair Removal
- Removed unwanted hair from the face, leg, arm, underarm, bikini line, and other areas.
- Lasers can selectively target dark, coarse hairs while leaving the surrounding skin undamaged.
- Most can expect a reduction of 80% hair growth. This is an average, and dependent on other factors.
How should i prepare for my treatment
First and foremost avoid exposure to sun. A tan can increase the side effects of a laser. Also avoid plucking, waxing, electrolysis, tanning solutions and chemical depilatory agents (agents that dissolve hair) for at least 6 weeks before treatment. This is because the laser will target the hair root and the above treatments will temporarily remove the root.

Laser Hair Removal Process
The doctor will press a hand-held laser instrument to your skin. Depending on the type of laser, a cooling device on the tip of the instrument or a cool gel might be used to protect your skin.
When the doctor activates the laser, the laser beam will pass through your skin to the tiny sacs (follicles) where hair growth originates. The intense heat from the laser beam damages the hair follicles, which inhibits hair growth. Some discomfort in the skin is possible, and you’ll likely feel a sensation of cold from the cooling device or gel.
Treating a small area, such as the upper lip, might take only a few minutes. Treating a larger area, such as the back, might take several hours.
Hair Removal Treatment recovery
For a day or two afterward, the treated area of your skin will look and feel like it’s sunburned. Cool compresses and moisturizers may help. Over the next month, your treated hair will fall out. Wear sunscreen for the following month to help prevent temporary changes in the color of the treated skin.
Laser Hair Removal Side Effects
Some of the risk with Laser Hair Removal is skin getting darker or lighter than the surrounding skin, blistering, scarring, damaging a tattoo in the area or even causing more hair to grow.
How many treatments are required?
Typically a series of 6 sessions is required. There are certain areas of the body that may require more. This will depend on the amount of hair treated, your skin type and the area being treated. As an example, facial hair will usually require more than 6.
Is Laser Hair Removal Permanent?
Laser hair removal is designed for the permanent reduction of unwanted hair. Therefore, it is permanent but because hair in a single area grows at different rates the technology is only designed to target actively growing hair, you’ll need more than one session to achieve desired results.
