Laser Hair Removal
What is Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal uses a specific wavelength of light to target individual hair follicles. The heat from the laser damages the hair follicles and inhibits future growth. During a treatment, the laser can only target actively growing hair and not “resting hair”. This is why this therapy requires multiple treatments and must be staggered weeks apart.

Common Areas treated
- Bikini area
Benefits of Laser Hair Removal
- Removed unwanted hair from the face, leg, arm, underarm, bikini line, and other areas.
- Lasers can selectively target dark, coarse hairs while leaving the surrounding skin undamaged.
- Most can expect a reduction of 80% hair growth. This is an average, and dependent on other factors.
How should I prepare for my treatment
First and foremost avoid exposure to the sun. A tan can increase the side effects of a laser. Also avoid plucking, waxing, electrolysis, tanning solutions and chemical depilatory agents (agents that dissolve hair) for at least 6 weeks before treatment. This is because the laser will target the hair root and the above treatments will temporarily remove the root.

Laser Hair Removal Treatment
The doctor will press a hand-held laser instrument to your skin. Depending on the type of laser, a cooling device on the tip of the instrument or a cool gel might be used to protect your skin.
When the doctor activates the laser, the laser beam will pass through your skin to the tiny sacs (follicles) where hair growth originates. The intense heat from the laser beam damages the hair follicles, which inhibits hair growth. Some discomfort in the skin is possible, and you’ll likely feel a sensation of cold from the cooling device or gel.
Treating a small area, such as the upper lip, might take only a few minutes. Treating a larger area, such as the back, might take several hours.
What to expect after laser hair removal?
For a day or two afterward, the treated area of your skin will look and feel like it’s sunburned. Cool compresses and moisturizers may help. Over the next month, your treated hair will fall out. Wear sunscreen for the following month to help prevent temporary changes in the color of the treated skin
How many treatments are required?
Typically a series of 6 sessions is required. There are certain areas of the body that may require more. This will depend on the amount of hair treated, your skin type and the area being treated. As an example, facial hair will usually require more than 6.
Is Laser Hair Removal Permanent?
Hair removal with a laser is designed for the permanent reduction of unwanted hair. But because of the nature of hair and the factors that influence hair growth results may vary from client to client. This technology is only designed to target actively growing hair, you’ll need more than one session to achieve desired results.
is the treatment painful?
Laser hair removal may be uncomfortable but usually is not painful. Everyone’s tolerance of pain is different though. There are tricks and techniques we can use to help your experience be more comfortable.
Laser hair removal side effects
We, at SKIN Medical Spa, take risks very seriously. We will not perform laser treatments if you have recently been exposed to the sun, are on certain medications or have other skin issues. Lasers are noted to cause redness and minor skin irritation. This is typical after a procedure. Other rare occurrences linked with lasers are hyper-pigmentation or hypo-pigmentation. SKIN Medical Spa has two of the leading lasers for hair removal used for all skin types. Your provider will discuss risks and benefits at length with you prior to your procedure.
