Candidates for Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal can achieve excellent results for both men and women, for people with coarse hair or relatively thin hair. The best results occur when there is a higher contrast between hair color and skin color. For example, a person with dark brown hair and light, untanned skin may see results sooner than a person with lighter hair color.
People considering laser hair removal need to commit to a series of treatments scheduled approximately 8 weeks apart. During the course of treatment, it is necessary to avoid tanning.
Advantages of Hair Removal A Laser
There are several benefits gained with laser hair removal, including freedom from shaving, plucking, or waxing. Having smoother skin enables a person to reduce time spent grooming while simultaneously increasing their satisfaction with their appearance.
Some of the advantages of laser hair removal include:
- Precision. Lasers target hair in the follicle while leaving surrounding tissue undisturbed.
- Speed. Depending on the size of the treatment area, laser treatment may take just a couple of minutes.
- Predictability. Laser devices have been extensively studied and improved over the years. Patients can expect to notice results after their very first treatment.
Common Areas Treated
- Upper Lip
- Bikini Area
Hair Removal Treatment
Prior to a laser hair removal treatment, it is best to avoid exposure to the sun. A tan can increase the side effects of a laser. Also avoid plucking, waxing, electrolysis, tanning solutions and chemical depilatory agents (agents that dissolve hair) for at least 6 weeks before treatment. This is because the laser will target the hair root and the above treatments will temporarily remove the root. For more detailed information check out laser hair removal instructions prior to your consultation appointment.
During the laser hair removal treatment, the doctor will press a hand-held laser instrument to your skin. Depending on the type of laser, a cooling device on the tip of the instrument or a cool gel might be used to protect your skin. Some discomfort in the skin is possible, and you’ll likely feel a sensation of cold from the cooling device or gel.
To some extent, the length of treatment depends on the texture of the patient’s hair and the location from which it is being removed. Treating a small area, such as the upper lip, might take only a few minutes. Treating a larger area, such as the back or chest, might take several hours.
How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
Laser hair removal is a precision process that eliminates hair by halting the growth process. During laser treatment, light from the device enters the hair follicles. This light transforms to heat immediately upon penetrating the skin’s surface. Heat gets absorbed by the pigment in hair, which vaporizes the part of the hair strand that is in the follicle. Additionally, heat gets absorbed into the walls of the follicle, disabling it. Through a series of treatments, new segments of hair are vaporized and the follicles are further impaired. This means that they lose their capacity to produce new hairs
What Our Patients Say
“Go here to get rid of those ingrown hairs and red bumps from shaving or waxing! SKIN has an awesome laser that sprays a cooling solution simultaneously when you’re being zapped to sooth any pain. It “hurt” about as much as if a rubber band was being lightly popped on your wrist.” – Raquel
“SKIN Medical Spa is a great place to get laser hair removal. It is clean, professional, warm, and I have gotten excellent results. Taline Hovsepian, RN, is personable and lovely as a person, and extremely good at her job.” – Anonymous
What To Expect After Hair Removal Treatment
After laser hair removal, it is common for the skin to feel slightly warm and uncomfortable like you have a mild sunburn. The skin may look slightly red or welted due to minor swelling around the hair follicles. These are temporary side effects that usually fade within 1 to 2 days after treatment. Side effects are also less intense after the first few sessions, as new hairs that grow into the follicle are typically finer and less dense.
Detailed instructions are provided to help patients pamper their skin in between laser treatments. Guidelines include strategies such as applying pure aloe vera to the treatment area and avoiding saunas and hot tubs for several days after treatment. A full outline of instructions should be provided at the time of treatment. If you have any questions about how to support healthy, smooth skin, contact our office. We’re here to help.
How many Sessions will it take to remove unwanted hair?
Although laser hair removal is designed for the permanent reduction of unwanted hair, most patients will need more than one treatment to achieve the desired results. Because all hair is not in the same stage of growth at any given time, it is recommended to have between three and five laser hair removal treatments, spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart. Typically a series of 6 sessions is required. There are certain areas of the body that may require more. This will depend on the amount of hair treated, your skin type, and the area being treated. As an example, facial hair will usually require more than 6.
Is laser hair removal permanent?
At the conclusion of a course of treatment, hair follicles have very little, if any, ability to produce hair. This function does tend to return at some point. However, when hair growth resumes, it is typically significantly limited. Not all hair follicles regain integrity. Most often, a person notices a few hairs growing here and there. When hair growth recurs, touch-up treatment can once again halt the new hair growth cycle.
Does laser hair removal Hurt?
Laser treatments are typically quite tolerable. Patients may experience a mild snapping sensation as strands of hair are vaporized. These sensations are momentary. The more general sensation that may occur during treatment is a wider-spread warmth beneath the skin. Most patients do not describe their process as painful.
side effects of Laser hair removal
At SKIN Medical Spa we take risks very seriously. We will not perform laser treatments if you have recently been exposed to the sun, are on certain medications or have other skin issues. Lasers are noted to cause redness and minor skin irritation. This is typical after a procedure. SKIN Medical Spa has two of the leading lasers for hair removal used for all skin types. Your provider will discuss risks and benefits at length with you prior to your procedure.
