Laser Hair Removal
What is Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal is a cosmetic procedure that uses pulsed laser energy to remove unwanted hair from targeted areas. It uses a specific wavelength of light to target individual hair follicles, while leaving the surrounding skin unharmed. The heat from the laser damages the hair follicles and inhibits future growth. Through this safe treatment, hair can be removed from nearly any area of the body. During laser hair removal, the laser can only target actively growing hair and not “resting hair”. For this reason, therapy requires multiple treatments and must be staggered weeks apart. Although there are many temporary treatments to remove unwanted hair, patients seeking more permanent and less irritating/painful methods are good candidates for laser hair removal.

Laser Hair Removal Treatment
Prior to a laser hair removal treatment, it is best to avoid exposure to the sun. A tan can increase the side effects of a laser. Also avoid plucking, waxing, electrolysis, tanning solutions and chemical depilatory agents (agents that dissolve hair) for at least 6 weeks before treatment. This is because the laser will target the hair root and the above treatments will temporarily remove the root. For more detailed information check out Laser Hair Removal Instructions prior to your consultation appointment.
During the laser hair removal treatment, the doctor will press a hand-held laser instrument to your skin. Depending on the type of laser, a cooling device on the tip of the instrument or a cool gel might be used to protect your skin. When the doctor activates the laser, the laser beam will pass through your skin to the tiny sacs (follicles) where hair growth originates. The intense heat from the laser beam damages the hair follicles, which inhibits hair growth. Some discomfort in the skin is possible, and you’ll likely feel a sensation of cold from the cooling device or gel.
To some extent, the length of treatment depends on the texture of the patient’s hair, and the location from which it is being removed. Treating a small area, such as the upper lip, might take only a few minutes. Treating a larger area, such as the back or chest, might take several hours.
Laser Hair Removal Results
For a day or two afterward, the treated area of your skin will look and feel like it’s sunburned. Cool compresses and moisturizers may help. Over the next month, your treated hair will fall out. Wear sunscreen for the following month to help prevent temporary changes in the color of the treated skin. After this your skin will be hairless and feel much smoother.
How many treatments will it take to remove unwanted hair?
Although laser hair removal is designed for the permanent reduction of unwanted hair, most patients will need more than one treatment to achieve the desired results. Because all hair is not in the same stage of growth at any given time, it is recommended to have between three and five laser hair removal treatments, spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart. Typically a series of 6 sessions is required. There are certain areas of the body that may require more. This will depend on the amount of hair treated, your skin type, and the area being treated. As an example, facial hair will usually require more than 6.
Laser hair removal side effects
At SKIN Medical Spa we take risks very seriously. We will not perform laser treatments if you have recently been exposed to the sun, are on certain medications or have other skin issues. Lasers are noted to cause redness and minor skin irritation. This is typical after a procedure. Other rare occurrences linked with lasers are hyper-pigmentation or hypo-pigmentation. SKIN Medical Spa has two of the leading lasers for hair removal used for all skin types. Your provider will discuss risks and benefits at length with you prior to your procedure.
