SKIN Medical Spa is a leader in San Francisco for BOTOX® and Dysport® injections. As one of the oldest medical spas in San Francisco, we have treated thousands of patients with great results. All of our injectors have years of extensive training and experience to ensure the absolute best results.
Dr. Colvin has been a certified injector trainer for Medicis Pharmaceutical (maker of Dysport® and Restylane) and continues to train physicians and nurses in San Francisco and northern California for Allergan Cosmetics (maker of BOTOX® and Juvederm). His passion is to give the patient a natural aesthetically pleasing look.
What is BOTOX®?
BOTOX® is an FDA-approved cosmetic treatment for fine lines and wrinkles. It contains a purified and safe form of botulinum toxin A, which when injected, relaxes the facial muscles. It is used to treat permanent furrows and deep wrinkles in the skin that are formed by the continual contraction of facial muscles. BOTOX® will give you smoother skin and will soften your facial lines.
This wrinkle treatment has become extremely popular amongst men and women. The injections for men and women will be similar but the amounts may vary. Men usually have larger and stronger muscles and may require more units. With this treatment you can reduce signs of aging and look years younger!
Benefits of BOTOX®
Not only is BOTOX® used to remove wrinkles, it is also used to treat severe underarm sweating, also known as hyperhydrosis. Effects can typically last 6 months or longer when used for hyperhydrosis. In addition, BOTOX® can be used to treat overactive bladder, neck spasms, crossed eyes, chronic back and jaw pain, and migraines.
Common areas treated:
- Forehead furrows
- Glabellar (between the eyes)
- Crows feet (around the eyes)
- Underneath the eye
- Frown lines
Is Dysport® Different from Botox®?
Dysport® is a smaller-sized molecule so its unit measurement is different than Botox. Botox and Dysport are very similar. Both are a type of botulinum type A that is injected to relax the muscles that cause frown lines and other over
active muscles of the face, like forehead lines and crows feet.
Some of the main differences are:
- Dysport may not last as long as Botox
- Dysport has a slightly quicker onset (2-5 days vs 4-7 days for Botox)
- Dysport spreads to a wider area. This is an advantage in some areas of the face and a disadvantage in others
- You need more Dysport to get the same result as Botox.
How Does BOTOX® Work?
During your consultation at SKIN Medical Spa, our team will determine how many units are needed to treat the desired area. Different areas require different amounts of units. Typically, the area between the eyebrows and around the eyes will require more than the forehead. The number of units and not the volume injected determines the effectiveness of your BOTOX® or Dysport® injections.
The BOTOX® injection requires no anesthetic, but some doctors numb the treated area prior to being injected. BOTOX is injected directly into the facial muscles. The neuromodulators work by relaxing the facial lines that create wrinkles, leaving the skin looking smoother and younger. It also prevents new lines from forming by blocking muscle contractions beneath the skin that causes wrinkles to form. Without these muscle contractions, your skin appears smoother and more youthful.
Botox is not reversible, but it also is not permanent. Everyones onset of action may be slightly different, but results begin to show in a couple of days and develop gradually over the course of two weeks. Results will vary but BOTOX® and Dysport® will typically last 3-4 months. A shorter duration may be seen in individuals with more prominent facial muscles. It is recommended that the patient gets treated on a regular basis to retain results longer.
BOTOX® Side Effects
Side effects of BOTOX® are typically mild and temporary. You may notice slight redness and swelling at the injection site. This looks similar to a mosquito bite and usually resolves in 5-10 minutes. Small bruises are possible but not frequent.
How Much Does BOTOX® Cost?
At SKIN Medical Spa we charge based only on the units used and not by the area. We have found this to be the most beneficial and cost effective method for the patient.
Can anyone get BOTOX® or Dysport®?
Most anyone can get BOTOX® or Dysport®. However, we will not perform the procedure if you are pregnant, actively trying to get pregnant or breastfeeding. There are other neurological conditions such as Myasthenia Gravis, Eaton-Lambert Syndrome or ALS that will prevent you from receiving this treatment.
