What Is The BOTOX® Procedure?
The neuromodulators in BOTOX® work by relaxing the facial lines that create wrinkles, leaving the skin looking smoother and younger. It also prevents new lines from forming by blocking muscle contractions beneath the skin that causes wrinkles to form. Without these muscle contractions, your skin appears smoother and more youthful.
Benefits of BOTOX® Injections
Not only is BOTOX® used to remove wrinkles, but it is also used to treat severe underarm sweating, also known as hyperhidrosis. Effects can typically last 6 months or longer when used for hyperhidrosis. In addition, BOTOX® can be used to treat overactive bladder, neck spasms, crossed eyes, chronic back, and jaw pain, and migraines.
Cosmetic Injections Candidacy
Most anyone can get BOTOX® and this wrinkle treatment has become extremely popular. Men or women can get BOTOX® injections but the units used will likely vary. Men usually have larger and stronger muscles and may require more units.
There are some candidate restrictions to receiving BOTOX® injections. We will not perform the procedure if you are pregnant, actively trying to get pregnant or breastfeeding. There are other neurological conditions such as Myasthenia Gravis, Eaton-Lambert Syndrome or ALS that will also prevent you from receiving this treatment.
BOTOX® Treatment Areas
- Forehead furrows
- Glabellar (between the eyes)
- Crows feet (around the eyes)
- Underneath the eye
- Frown lines
Dr. Colvin suggests using BOTOX® for directly under the eyes. It helps with the wrinkles and the bunchiness that can form with your skin as you age. It will also help create symmetry between the two eyes. If one eye is larger than the other, BOTOX® can be injected under the smaller one to help open it up more, creating more symmetry.
Dr. Colvin’s favorite place to inject BOTOX® is the glabellar area. It gets rid of the lines and creates a natural look. It takes away the negative expression on your face and also opens up the eyebrows by relaxing the muscles.
BOTOX® Brow Lift
If you are looking for a lift in your eyebrows without the surgery, Dr. Colvin suggests using BOTOX®. Cosmetic injections can raise the middle part of the eyebrow. You can also inject the outside area of the eyebrow and lift that as well, which shows off more of the eye and creates a younger look.
What Results Should I Expect From A BOTOX® Injection?
BOTOX® is not reversible, but it also is not permanent. Everyone’s onset of action may be slightly different, but results begin to show in a couple of days and develop gradually over the course of two weeks. Most patients see that the results of their injections will typically last 3-4 months.
How Much BOTOX® Will I need?
During your consultation at SKIN Medical Spa, our team will determine how many units are needed to treat the desired area. Different areas require different amounts of units. For example, the area between the eyebrows and around the eyes will typically require more units than the forehead. The number of units and not the volume injected determines the effectiveness of your injections. The number of units also determines the cost of your procedure. We have found this to be the most beneficial and cost-effective method for the patient.
Before & After BOTOX®
Side Effects of Cosmetic Injections
Side effects of BOTOX® are typically mild and temporary. You may notice slight redness and swelling at the injection site. This looks similar to a mosquito bite and usually resolves in 5-10 minutes. Small bruises are possible but not frequent.
Dysport®: An Alternative to BOTOX®
Dysport® is an injectable cosmetic derived from botulinum toxin type A. The product works in the same manner as Botox. When injected into a tensed muscle, the toxin protein within Dysport temporarily prevents full muscle contraction, leading to smoother, younger-looking skin.
BOTOX® vs. Dysport®
Dysport® is very similar to BOTOX® since they are both a type of cosmetic injectable. Both contain botulinum type A which, when injected, works to relax the muscles that cause frown lines and other overactive muscles of the face, like forehead lines and crows feet. Dysport® differs from BOTOX® in some ways including:
- Dysport® may not last as long as BOTOX®
- You need more Dysport® to get the same results as BOTOX®
- Dysport® has a slightly quicker onset and spreads to a wider area.
Candidates for Dysport®
Most adults can safely and conveniently receive Dysport® treatments. The injectable is appropriate for individuals who are interested in smoothing the appearance of what are commonly referred to as dynamic wrinkles. Ideal patients are in good overall health and understand what can be accomplished with injectable wrinkle-reducers. Patients who have had an adverse reaction to Botox® should avoid Dysport®.
Benefits of Dysport® Injections
Dysport® is a convenient method of treating the signs of aging around the eyes. Studies have demonstrated a consistent degree of safety and efficacy using this drug. In addition to predictable results when treatment is obtained from a trained professional, Dysport® also offers the advantage of quick onset and lasting results.
areas Treated With Dysport®
Dysport® is commonly used to reduce wrinkles caused by muscle movement. Treatment is appropriate for crow’s feet, frown lines, and worry lines on the forehead. Patients may also choose Dysport® for a nonsurgical brow lift.
Does Dysport® work immediately?
Dysport® works by inhibiting the communication between neurotransmitters and specific muscles. For this to happen, the product must bind to particular receptors beneath the skin. Patients may notice the onset of rejuvenating results 1 to 3 days after their Dysport® treatment. The skin may continue to improve for up to 14 days.
How long do Dysport® injections last?
Results from Dysport treatment are similar to Botox in terms of longevity. Patients may notice that wrinkles subtly reappear 3 to 6 months after treatment. As results fade, repeat injections can be safely administered to maintain a youthful appearance.
How often should you get Dysport® Injections?
Wrinkle-reducing treatment with Dysport can be repeated as often as every 3 to 4 months to maintain rejuvenating effects. Patients may also receive a touch-up treatment 2 weeks after their initial Dysport injections to enhance results.
Is Dysport® Safe?
Dysport contains such a minute amount of botulinum toxin that it is generally safe for most people. In clinical studies, side effects were largely limited to temporary itching, swelling, and redness. Some patients may encounter flu-like symptoms or dizziness, those this is less common. It is rare for a patient to experience adverse reaction such as difficulty breathing or swallowing. If these more serious side effects occur, prompt medical attention can halt the reaction.
